POLITICAL CAREER

Elected to the Senate in 2002, Brater was mayor of Ann Arbor from 1991 to 1993 and an Ann Arbor City Council Member from 1998 to 1991. She was elected to the House in 1994. Brater has served as Assistant Minority Leader from 2003 to present.

WORK EXPERIENCE
Brater worked as a freelance writer and editor from 1975 to 1994, a lecturer for the Institute of Public Policy for University of Michigan's English Department, and Land Use Director for the Ecology Center from 2001 to 2002.

EDUCATION
Brater received her B.A. in American Civilization from University of Pennsylvania in 1973 and her M.A. in History from that school in 1975.

PERSONAL
Born April 12, 1951, Brater is married to Enoch Brater. She has two children.

CIVIC ACTIVITIES
Brater is a member of the Alliance for the Mentally Ill, SOS Community Services, the League for Women Voters, the NAACP, NOW, the SIerra Club, the PTO of Pioneer High School, the Washtenaw Women's Political Caucus.
