POLITICAL CAREER Byrnes was appointed by Governor Jennifer Granholm to serve on the Michigan Board of Pharmacy. Prior to being elected in 2004 to the House she served as a Washtenaw County Road Commissioner. In December 2000, Byrnes was appointed to the Washtenaw County Road Commission, being the first woman road commissioner in Washtenaw County.
WORK EXPERIENCE Rep. Byrnes served as Director of the Washtenaw County Friend of the Court from 1978 to 1981, where she was entrusted by the public, County Commissioners and Circuit Court Judges to be responsible for a 39-member staff and a budget in excess of $1 million. In 1981, she established her private practice, focusing primarily on family law. From 1986 to 1989, Byrnes taught business law at Eastern Michigan University and Cleary College in Ypsilanti, Michigan.
EDUCATION Pam Byrnes attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, where she received her A.A. in Liberal Arts. She later went on to obtain a B.A. in Far Eastern Studies at the University of Michigan and a J.D. degree from the University of Maryland Law School. Byrnes was admitted to the State Bar of Michigan and Federal Bar in May of 1976.
PERSONAL Pam lives on a small farm in Lyndon Township with her husband, Kent Brown. On their farm, they raise miniature donkeys and pygmy goats. Pam and Kent have two daughters: Katie, an engineer at Ford Motor Company; and Jodie, a teacher in Seattle, Washington.
CIVIC ACTIVITIES Byrnes has served on the Saline Planning Commission, the Saline Historic District Commission, the Ypsilanti Heritage Festival Committee, the Washtenaw Coordinating Council for Children at Risk, the Washtenaw Advisory Committee on the Status of Women, the Washtenaw County Bar Association, and as a Board member for Child and Family Services of Washtenaw County and the Ypsilanti Central Business Community. She is a member of the Rotary Club of Ypsilanti where she has served as president, and is its current assistant governor. She is an active member of the Chelsea, Dexter, Saline and Ypsilanti Area Chambers of Commerce. As an outgrowth of her long-standing involvement in the Washtenaw County Democratic Party, Ms. Byrnes founded the Western Washtenaw Democratic Club and served as its first Chair.
